ESSAY: MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT
I like reading stories about famous personalities. The lives of great men and women fascinate me. They inspire me to do something great myself. Naturally, my favorite subject is History. But this was not always so.
When I was in Standard Five, I failed in History in the First Unit Test. After that, Daddy began teaching me. Daddy teaches History in a Degree College, and his knowledge is really vast. He has the dates and events at his fingertips. And he narrates everything like an interesting story. I did very well in History in the next examination. But more than that, I had developed an abiding love for the subject.
I love reading about the battles of Panipat, about Chhatrapati Shivaji’s successes and the great Indian Freedom Struggle. I particularly like the stories of Tipu Sultan and Nana Saheb Peshwa. The bravery of the Rani of Jhansi fascinates me.
I am always in search of books that tell me more about these great people, especially their childhood. There is the story of how Gandhiji refused to copy the word he had misspelt. Or the one about how Tilak, in his school days, refused to sweep the classroom because he had not thrown peanut shells on the floor. Or the one of how Vallabhbhai Patel took a hot iron to burn a boil under his armpit. These stories show me how brave and truthful these great leaders were, even as children.
Many of my friends complain that History is a very difficult subject. Thankfully, it isn’t for me. It shall always be my one and only favorite subject.
