Essay – Guru Poornima | Speech on Guru Purnima
Guru Poornima is a celebration of the spiritual and academic teachers in our lives who guide us on the path of knowledge and enlightenment. It is a day to express gratitude and honor the significance of the Guru-disciple relationship. The word “Guru” holds deep meaning and encompasses much more than a mere teacher. A Guru is a beacon of light, illuminating the way for their disciples. They selflessly lead their students forward while remaining rooted in their own place.
In ancient times, Gurus were revered figures, and over the years, their role has transformed into that of teachers or “Sirs.” However, the respect and passion associated with this role remain unchanged. Indian Puranas contain numerous stories highlighting the importance of a Guru in one’s life. Yet, I would like to share a contemporary story that reflects the essence of Guru Poornima.
Once, a village Guru visited his successful student’s office in the city. The office was located in a grand building, surrounded by soldiers and expensive cars. Impressed by his student’s achievements, the Guru entered the office through the building’s elevator. The student rose from his chair to greet his Guru with a salute. They engaged in a conversation, discussing various matters, and then bid farewell. The disciple accompanied his Guru downstairs to see him off.
As they were parting ways, the Guru decided to test his disciple. Placing his hand on the student’s shoulder, he asked, “Tell me, who do you think is the greatest today?” Hoping to hear a compliment, the Guru expected the student to say that he, the Guru, was the greatest. However, to his disappointment, the student responded, “Teacher, am I not a great man today?” Surprised and disheartened, the Guru continued his journey a few steps ahead.
