Lokmanya Tilak: The Inspiring Patriot and Freedom Fighter
My favorite national hero is Lokmanya Tilak, a prominent figure who played a significant role in India’s struggle for independence. Born on July 23, 1856, in Chikhalgaon, Maharashtra, Bal Gangadhar Tilak earned the title ‘Lokmanya,’ meaning ‘one respected by the people.’ His immense dedication and tireless efforts to fight against British rule make him an inspiring figure.
Tilak began his career as a lawyer and later transitioned into teaching. However, the social and political conditions of India deeply troubled him. To express his ideas and awaken the masses, he established two newspapers: the Marathi-language ‘Kesari’ and the English-language ‘Mahratta’ in 1881.
One of Tilak’s notable contributions was his opposition to societal ills such as child marriage. He actively advocated for women’s literacy and widow remarriage, emphasizing the importance of empowering women. Additionally, he initiated public celebrations of the Ganesh festival in Maharashtra, as well as the Shiv Jayanti Festival, aiming to unite people and instill a spirit of resistance against British rule.
